Teeth Whitening Q & A

How does teeth whitening work?

The outer portion of your tooth is a hard surface called enamel. Over time, your enamel’s constant exposure to food and drink (and cigarettes, if you’re a smoker) can leave it stained and discolored. And that yellowed smile can leave you looking old and tired.

Fortunately, you’re not stuck with discoloration. Dr. Nichols offers transformative teeth whitening to help you reclaim your smile’s natural radiance. This process works by lifting stains from your tooth’s enamel.

For your convenience, Dr. Nichols and her team offer two types of teeth whitening: in-office and at-home whitening with take-home trays. If you choose the former, they apply a whitening gel to your teeth for 60-90 minutes. In just one appointment, you can leave with markedly whiter teeth.

But you can also whiten your teeth at home. To start, Dr. Nichols takes a scan of your whole mouth. Using this scan, she then creates custom trays to fit comfortably and precisely over your teeth. Dr. Nichols sends you home with these trays and a specialized whitening gel.

You have the flexibility to wear your trays at your convenience, for a maximum of 20 minutes a day, for two weeks, to dramatically brighten your smile.

When should I get teeth whitening?

Some people choose to get their teeth whitened so they look their best before a big event, like a major presentation at work or a wedding. But you don’t have to wait until a momentous occasion to get this treatment and boost your self-confidence.

Don’t hesitate to talk to Dr. Nichols about teeth whitening if you’re interested in a brighter smile.

What should I consider before teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening only lifts stains from your tooth’s enamel. The whitening solution isn’t an all-around bleaching agent, so any noticeable fillings or other dental work will still be visible. If you’re unhappy with your smile’s appearance, don’t hesitate to talk to Dr. Nichols and consult with her to determine if you’re a good candidate.

Dr. Nichols and her team can help you explore all of the cosmetic dental treatments available today — like tooth whitening alongside color-matched fillings or veneers — so you can pick the right solution for your smile goals.
